Huawei Mate SE (Factory Unlocked)
The Huawei Mate SE is an Android smartphone with a powerful processor and an edge-to-edge screen that offers excellent performance at a budget price.
Design and Build Quality
Build quality is usually one of the weak points of budget phones; however, Huawei has made an effort to ensure that this phone looks and feels like a premium device. The metal design is sturdy, and the glass face blends seamlessly into the chassis. It’s a pleasure to hold in your hand, and it endures day-to-day use quite handsomely.
Let’s face it: the majority of us use our smartphones for more than just phone calls. This handset is more than capable of gaming, watching videos, and using social media. It has a 5.93-inch screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 2160×1090 FHD resolution. It’s a FullView display with glorious deep colors and stunning pixel density, so whatever you want to see or watch, you’ll have a pleasant experience.
Perhaps the best feature of the Huawei Mate SE is its battery. The 3340mAh battery means you can play Pokemon Go or watch videos without having to worry about connecting to your power brick any time soon.
You can be sure that the GPS will get you where you need to be, and you can also listen to music while you travel. Like all Android devices, there is a battery-saving feature for when you need it, but you can be sure that for everyday use, you won’t need it.
Another excellent selling point of the Huawei Mate SE is the camera. It features a dual ln camera, 16MP + 2MP, to take the best photos, with a dedicated portrait mode feature to allow you to take stunning portraits with a bokeh effect applied for you. You’ll look like a professional photographer, even though you are simply going point-and-shoot!
Day to Day Performance
If you’re sick of your existing phone chugging when you open demanding apps or when you’re doing a lot of task switching, then you will love the performance of the Octa-Core Kirin 659. It has a faster clock speed than the Snapdragon 625 and outperforms it on most benchmarks.
This makes it great for running the vast majority of apps and still a reliable choice for general gaming. There are some areas where the Snapdragon 625 can outperform it, thanks to having the Adreno 506 GPU, but unless you plan on using your phone exclusively as a gaming device (where the GPU will have a more noticeable impact), the Kirin 659 is a wise choice. It is a good all-rounder, and while it may not be the ‘elite choice’ for games, it can still handle them, and it handles them far better than most low to mid-range phones.
Overall, there is a lot to love about the Huawei Mate SE. In addition to the core features mentioned above, you will find ample storage, with 64GB for photos, videos, apps, and games and 4GB RAM for day-to-day use. The Octa-Core processor is suitably beefy, and EMUI 5.1, which is Huawei’s flavor of Andriod 7.0, offers good performance. The phone is a Dual SIM too, so if you want your home and work numbers on one phone, you can do that. If you want to call internationally, you can do that. If you don’t want to use Dual SIM, then the extra SIM slot doubles as a microSD card so you can have even more storage!
If you want a snappy phone, has a nice screen and a good camera, this will not disappoint for an affordable price.
- 64 GB internal storage.
- Powerful octa-core processor.
- Dual camera setup.
- 2160 x 1090 pixels display.
- It comes loaded with Android 8.0 Oreo.
- No USB Type-C.
- Have no support for 5GHz Wifi.
Motorola is considered by many to be the best budget smartphone manufacturer. They continually release some of the ‘best value’ smartphones in the marketplace. Their G6 is no different. The G6, just like its predecessor, G5, features a near-stock version of Android OS, offering a superb price to performance ratio.
The phone features a 5.7-inch screen with an extra-wide 18:9 aspect ratio. This has been an ongoing trend within the premium sector, and Motorola decided to go with the trend with its budget offering. With that being said, the screen doesn’t necessarily offer the greatest performance with decent color accuracy and average brightness.
An LCD screen allows for good color accuracy, but it certainly lacks the ‘pop’ that you would get from LED displays. The brightness the display offers is average to below average, and it is dramatically reduced from Motorola’s predecessor, which is a shame. However, the display lives up to expectations based on its budget category and price point.
This is an area in which the Moto G6 offers a good amount of value. With a 3,000mAh sized battery, it is capable of delivering a good amount of battery life for the average user. While it will not be substituted as the ideal phone for those considered power users, it is certainly capable enough within its respective price point.
The performance of this phone lives up to what we have come to expect from Motorola’s budget offerings. While the specs on paper might seem like a significant step back from its latest iteration, the performance in real life is negligible and out-performs ‘higher’ chipsets in certain tests.
With this phone, you should be able to use it on a daily basis and expect snappy performance with no noticeable lag while switching between apps or even while using browser tabs. The graphics performance is the same as the previous iteration as the GPU remains unchanged. Because of this, it is not going to be the ideal ‘gaming’ phone. However, no budget phone should be used for serious gaming anyways.
The phone itself offers one of the better build qualities that you will find in the budget category. While the choice of materials might have some flaws, the phone feels excellent in hand.
Not only is it well proportioned, but it offers a premium feel in hand. It offers Gorilla Glass 3 on the back of the phone, while some might prefer it. Along with this, the excellent proportioning of the phone makes it one of the best feeling phones in hand.
This design is absolutely perfect for one-handed users. Another big change from the previous iteration comes with the introduction of USB-C connectivity and charging. While the phone itself doesn’t have any sort of IP rating for waterproofing, Motorola has gone on record saying that the phone is capable of handling slight excess moisture and dust well.
Overall, this is one of the better values within the budget category. Motorola remains one of the best budget manufacturers on the market. They offer one of the lowest-priced smartphones within the category without lacking in neither build quality nor performance.
The display might not be the best in its category, and it offers excellent value and performance for the money. The best part about this phone is Motorola’s excellent intuitive software feature additions and excellent design and building quality. As long as you are not expecting out-of-this-world gaming performance, you are likely to be very satisfied with the purchase of the G6. It has the compromises that you would expect within the budget category but offers premium value in specific categories making it very compelling.
- Stock Android
- It offers the best performance in its segment.
- Battery life is amazing.
- The camera quality is good, especially with decent lighting.
- The display is not the “best” you can get in this price segment.
- Will not get any future OS updates, except the security patches.
It is the latest iteration of the Nokia 6. The Nokia 6 entered the marketplace and earned many tech blog awards for the best budget phone of the year.
The 6.1 improves on many aspects of its predecessor, making it another superb value offering from Nokia. In fact, like the brand of old, HMD Global (the company that licenses the branding) has lived up to Nokia’s past claim of having the best build quality in the industry.
This is typically where you will see many manufacturers looking to make concessions to lower the overall manufacturing cost of budget phones. However, Nokia managed to pack in an impressive display that can compete with mid-tier and even higher-end phones on the market. They managed to pack the phone with a gorgeous 5.5-inch 1080p glossy screen, allowing for beautiful content viewing. Along with this, the screen comes with Gorilla Glass 3, which means that it is built with durability in mind. A majority of manufacturers pack phones in with sub-HD displays and/or without durability in mind. The display alone makes this phone one of the better values on the market. You simply cannot tell from looking at it or using it that it is a budget phone.
Battery life is another area where a lot of manufacturers look to cut corners when they are looking to bring out a budget smartphone. Luckily, Nokia understands how important battery life is to its customers much better than other manufacturers. Therefore, they managed to pack in a good size battery that can satisfy a majority of users that might not be considered ‘power users.’
It packs in a 3,000mAh battery that can typically last all day, and it comes with fast charging compatibility through the new standard (USB-C). This was one of the major criticisms of the previous iteration, and they listened to the feedback and updated the newer model to the USB-C standard.
The phone does lack wireless charging, but not many budget phones will come with this feature that is typically only found in premium offerings.
This is another area that 6.1 managed to really deliver in. While the phone is within the budget price range, Nokia packed in the Snapdragon 630 in this phone along with 3GB of RAM. Because of the optimization they offer, and because they offer a mostly pure Android experience, the performance feels snappy, and it delivers good day-to-day use.
As long as you are not a power user constantly switching between apps and/or playing high-resolution games all of the time, you are likely going to be very satisfied with the performance the phone is capable of delivering. However, in terms of camera performance, an area where Nokia is known to excel, the phone doesn’t do anything too impressive. That being said, the camera performance is certainly adequate for its price tier and remains one of the better budget cameras on the market.
This is where Nokia manages to outshine the rest of the competition within the budget sector. The simple truth, this is the best-built budget phone on the market. The brand is well known for producing some of the highest build quality phones on the market, and 6.1 is no exception.
In fact, it is in the running for one of the most durable phones in the entire marketplace. Not only does it feature some of the most durable materials, being made up of anodized metal, but it features a minimalistic design with complementing accent colors. Along with this, it comes with optimal fingerprint placement right on the back of the phone, where you would typically rest your index finger as most manufacturers are doing.
Overall, this is one of the best budget phones for the entire market. Nokia managed to deliver outstanding value at a budget price without any compromises. Not only does it offer superior build quality, but it hits on many other marks that a lot of other manufacturers miss when delivering budget smartphones.

Honor 6X Dual Camera
There are a lot of great-looking phones available on the market, but none are as sleek and stunning to look at as the Honor 6x. It is indeed one of the best phones under 300. It is also one of the most successful smartphones in the Chinese market.
Its ergonomic design, smooth curves, and 8.2mm slim body with the frosted metal material and 2.5 D curved glass with premium texture design are just as impressive as its overall performance. The honor 6x is truly a smartphone made for youngsters.
The phone is equipped with all necessities, including 5.5 inches 1080 Full HD touchscreen display. It is fueled by a 1.7Ghz Octa-Core Kirin 655 Processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. The phone comes with 32Gb of internal storage that can be expandable up to 128 GB via a MicroSD card.
The Honor 6x sports a dual-lens 12MP, 2MP primary camera. It’s quite a unique feature, and the picture quality is truly excellent. You can see the dual camera in the image attached below.
This phone also comes with an inbuilt application that allows you to customize and beautify your photos. On the front, it has an 8MP camera with a 77-degree wide angles lens and a Prime ISP. It also includes a third-generation fingerprint scanner, which allows you to unlock your phone at the touch of your finger in merely 0.3 seconds.
The Device runs the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system, which supports the 4G LTE network. It is a dual-SIM smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM in both slots. It is powered by a massive 3340mAh non-removable battery that can last up to two days or one and a half-day of heavy usage.

BLU PURE XR Smartphone
If you are looking for an affordable Android smartphone that could give you access to the best premium class features, then you must read our in-depth BLU PURE XR review.
It’s a smartphone that comes with 3D touch-sensitive display. It’s the latest technology and is available only on a handful of premium products in the market. This technology allows the device to react differently to different levels of pressure you apply on the screen. It is thus offering you the best in class user experience.
Since the body is a build-up of aerospace-grade aluminum, this phone has an ultra-smooth, sleek, and almost indestructible body. On the front, you will get an outstanding, wide touchscreen, and at the bottom, you get a fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner’s sensitivity and response time are quite impressive, and its placement makes it super easy to use.
It has a full high definition, 5.5 inches curved Super AMOLED display. The screen resolution is 1980 X 1080, and the pixel density per inch is 400. The smooth curves at the corner give it a very pleasant look and feel. It has Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which ensures the safety of your screens. It prevents the display from external damage and scratches.
BLU PURE XR is powered by one of the mightiest octa-core processors, MediaTek Helio P10. It offers to process speed up to 2.0Ghz, and rarely any other competitor comes even close to it. It even has one of the most energy-efficient GPUs, Mali-T860. This GPU offers a processing power of 650MHz, and its throughput is close to 10.4Gpix/s. Furthermore, it’s loaded with 4GB Ram and 64GB internal. Overall, you can say that each requirement is fulfilled to offer you the smoothest gaming experience and daily business activity.
Now let’s talk a bit about its camera quality. It has a 16MP primary camera powered by the 6P lens, something you will not even find in Apple’s iPhone. In addition, it is loaded with Laser autofocus and probabilistic data association filter technology. On the front, it has an 8MP camera which offers quite good selfie pictures in daylight.
As far as connectivity is concerned, it comes with 4G LTE with a bandwidth speed of up to 400Mbps. Furthermore, it is compatible with every GSM network in the United States, including AT&T, T-Mobiles, and more.
This device supports the quick charge, and according to the official statement, you can get 1 hour of talk time with just 10 minutes of charge. It comes with a 3000 mAh nonremovable battery. Overall for me, it’s the best smartphone under 300 you can get right now in the market. Its features are just as impressive as its sleek and modern design.
- Build quality is superb. Build with a series of 7000 aluminum.
- Comes with 3D touch display which is one of the most advanced technology.
- It offers the best performance as a MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor powers it.
- The fingerprint sensor is fast.
- It comes with an old Andriod 6.0 Marshmallow operating system.
- Battery life is decent as it only has a 3000mAh capacity.
Lenovo Phab 2
The Lenovo Phab 2is one of the most feature-rich mid-range Android smartphones available at around $170. It comes with a premium design and good build quality that delivers tremendous value for money. It may not boast flagship performance, but it manages a full 24hours battery life from a single charge and furthermore comes loaded with lots of features.
First and foremost, let’s discuss the display quality. The Lenovo Phab 2 features a 6.4-inch IPS HD display, feels generous without making the phone uncomfortably large, and there are relatively slim bezels at the side of the screen. You will find speakers and a camera at the top and a fingerprint sensor button at the bottom on the phone’s front side. The device is not so thick as well, as it comes with a weight of 225g, which is fair for a phone with a metal body.
Getting beyond the design, the phone uses a power-friendly 1.3 GHz MTK8735 quad-core processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM. It means you will have a non-lagging, ultra-smooth experience Playing high-resolution games and can multitask without any hiccups. You also get Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, Wi-Fi 902.11 b/g/n, and 4G LTE network support. As for storage, you get 32 GB of inbuilt storage that can be expandable up to 128 GB through a microSD card.
The two cameras of this mid-range Android device offer excellent picture quality. The primary or the rear camera comes with a 13MP sensor and is assisted with an LED flash. The front sensor is 5MP. A quick snap feature lets you take a photo when the phone is asleep by double-tapping either volume button.
The Phab 2 comes with Android v6.0 Marshmallow OS and some pre-installed apps like Three in Touch and Lenovo’s SHAREit and SYNCit, but these apps are easy to uninstall if you don’t want them. It comes with a non-removable 4,050mAh battery, which is among the biggest we’ve seen on a smartphone yet. It boasts a 24 hours battery life, and you can get up to 32 hours of talk time.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime
The new Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime comes with a full metal body, which is elegantly curved on its edges. Furthermore, implementing the latest trend provides you with a strong 2.5D Gorilla Glass display, which definitely gives this smartphone a premium feel. Thanks to its 5.5inches display, this phone is more immersive and gives a more sturdy look.
Considering all its latest competitors, Samsung is currently offering this powerful and premium smartphone at an affordable price. I can assure you that this device will impress all its users with its performance, looks, and features.
For Samsung Galaxy, the J series has been a turning point. The Galaxy J7 features a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 TFT-LCD screen, which comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Unfortunately, the top glass panel is rather reflective in bright light, and you are hardly able to see the app drawer. Though you can easily overcome this problem by enabling the ambient light sensor, as far as accessibility is concerned, on the left part of the smartphone, you’ll find two distinct volume buttons as well as the SIM and microSD card slots.
The device is boosted by an octa-core Samsung Exynos 7870 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz coupled with 3GB of RAM. It also includes 16GB of inbuilt storage that can be expandable up to 256 GB via a microSD card. The additional feature of the Galaxy J7 Prime is a fingerprint sensor that focuses on security and privacy.
The Samsung Galaxy j7 is a dual-SIM smartphone and comes with support for two Nano-SIM with 4G connectivity on both. If we talk about the camera, it sports a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera with f/1.9 aperture and LED flash. There is also an 8-megapixel front selfie camera that provides good quality images and videos. The phone has a non-removable 3300mAh battery, which can run up to a day. The highlights feature of the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime is ultra-saving mode and S bike mode. Motorola Moto X Play XT1562
The Moto X Play is a flagship Android smartphone under $300 Motorola. This new model comes with a high-end, stylish design and offers more battery power and a better display.
Currently, it is available in two different variants with two different internal storage options: 16GB and 32GB. The phone cost $228 for the 16 GB option and $319 for the 32 GB version.
This phone features a large and bright 5.5-inch, 1080p LCD panel with a 403ppi. It’s hard to see the screen while you are outside, especially in daylight. The device is very comfortable to hold, thanks to its rubberized rear panel. As far as thickness is concerned, it has a thickness of 8.9mm on its edges and 10.9mm in the middle.
The Moto X Play utilizes the power of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor and comes along with Adreno 405 GPU, which enables you to play all the latest high-end games without any lag. The hardware set-up is certainly capable of handling basic to mid-level tasks, but it does lag when you try to run multiple applications and games at the same time.
There are only 2 GB of RAM on the phone, which should be okay for basic usage. But this device does feel non-responsive when you try to handle multiple browsers with multiple open tabs. It comes with 16GB and 64GB internal storage options that can be expanded up to 128GB through a MicroSD card.
For all those camera fans, the Moto X Play sports a 21 MP primary sensor loaded with extra features like f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. The rear camera of this device is best for high-resolution pictures. On the front, it comes with a 5 MP front camera, which offers decent image quality and is good enough for video calling. The device is packed with a massive 3630mAh cell, which lasts up to a day of heavy usage. Thanks to Turbo Power Technology, it helps to juice up 8 hours of power in just 15 minutes of charging.
- Great camera quality with lots of advanced features.
- Superb screen with high sensitivity.
- Stock Android, but you are always free to Root your device.
- Decent battery life.
- Not fully waterproof
- There is no USB Type-C port.
- You don’t get a turbo power charger, and you will need to purchase it.

Lenovo Z2 is another mid-range phone with high-end features and display. The smartphone strikes the perfect balance between style and performance. It features a 5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED capacitive touch with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels at a density of 441 pixels per inch. Furthermore, its screen comes protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which makes your display scratch-resistant. To further enhance the display quality, it comes with anti-oil and anti-fingerprint protection.
The phone comes in a light and sleek metallic body that weighs about 140 grams, even with a powerful 3500mAh battery power. Under the hood, it is fuelled by a 2.15 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, and it comes with 4GB of RAM and 64 GB onboard storage. The high processor and RAM ensure the phone runs smoothly even when you are running multiple applications simultaneously. The phone also packs an Adreno 530 GPU for handling high graphics demanding games and multitasking.
Coming to the optics, Lenovo Z2 Plus sports a 13MP rear sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and includes features like phase detection autofocus, electronic image stabilization, and LED flash, which allows you to capture stunning photographs in any light condition. Furthermore, with its 8-megapixel front-facing camera, you can snap amazing wide-angle selfies.
This device also comes with the latest fingerprint sensor. This sensor is fast, with a response time of fewer than 0.3 seconds, but it is also very accurate. It acts as the first layer of security on your device and allows only the appropriate owner to unlock the device with the tap of a finger.
The surprising feature of the smartphone is its six professional mobile sensors, which are compatible with fitness trackers like heart rate monitors, cadence sensors, and power meters. The Dual SIM phone comes with a broad range of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, and a 4G LTE network. The device packs a 3500mAh high-density lithium-polymer battery, which lasts up to all day long. It also includes a Quick charging facility to refuel the battery rapidly. The phone is available in two color options (White or Black).
Unfortunately, the phone lacks only concerning expandable storage.
- Convenient size and good build quality.
- Excellent performance.
- Superb price.
- Decent battery life.
- Interesting home button tweaks.
- Sub-par camera.
- 960fps shooting is just a gimmick.
- No expandable storage.
- Fast charge capable charger not bundled.
HTC One A9
The HTC One A9 is one of the most pocketable smartphones available today. The phone fits perfectly in hand thanks to its 5.74 x 2.79 x 0.29 inches dimension. It looks and feels a lot like an iPhone 6 though it doesn’t come with the iOS operating system. As far as the body is concerned, it is covered with black metal and a unibody design with curved corners. The phone has a full metal body that looks more impressive, and it proves that the handset is meant to be a little more premium.
The HTC One A9 comes with a 5-inch AMOLED capacitive HD 1080-pixel touchscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It’s a pretty good screen for a phone of this size- it looks great with real clarity in the colors. But it’s one of the areas where more improvements could be surely made.
Now let’s talk about the performance. This device is powered by a 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 + Quad-Core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM. It supports Quick Charge 3.0, which charges the phone rapidly. Apart from that, HTC One A9 has 32 GB storage that can be expanded up to 200 GB using MicroSD cards.
After the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, the HTC One A9 was one of the first smartphones to launch with Android v6.0 Marshmallow OS. The front of the phone has a selfie camera, proximity sensors at the top, and a fingerprint sensor at the bottom. The fingerprint scanner will quickly unlock your phone with a response time of less than a second. The phone sports a 13 MP back camera, including optical image stabilization, autofocus, and Dual LED Flash. It can also shoot high-definition videos at 30fps, and on the front, it has a 4MP camera shooter.
Thanks to the HTC BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers and Dolby Audio surround enhancement, watching videos and playing high-definition games is more enjoyable. The phone also provides a good quality headset, which you can utilize to listen to your favorite music. On the back, the device packs a non-removable Li-Ion 2150 mAh battery, which lasts up to 432Hrs Standby and talks time up to 16 hrs. Now, this is another area where more improvements could be made. I mean, for a mid-range smartphone, you are getting away with too low battery power.
- Good performance
- Impeccable build quality
- Decent cameras
- The display size is small compares to its competitors.
- The battery power is too low.
- The quick Charge-compatible charger is not included.
LG Google Nexus 5X
